"Abraham is our father"

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+8%3A31-59&version=KJV
Her is a Link to the passage of scripture that I'll be commonly referring to

I left off last time by mentioning that the pharisees were very quick to make known that truly they were descendants of Abraham (vs33) but in doing so had let their pride show on so many levels. This is not the first time that they had made a flawed argument. Earlier in the previous chapter (7: 52) "they answered and said unto him, art thou also of  Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet"  they obviously had forgotten that Jonah was called from the city of Gath-hepher which is in the very middle of Galilee. (2 Kings 14:25)

When our Pride gets the best of us, these flaws start to come out in arguments and expose the other sections in our statements that we count on to defend us. So in chapter 8, their are 2 arguments that the pharisees make
1.Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
2. We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man
the first argument shows us that they did not know who the Father or what Spiritual things Christ was saying. Christ explains in (vs14-18) His Father witnesses for Him, and the witness that He had been giving throughout history was one and the same. Kind of like a politician that claims look at my long list of voting history and you can see what I've done and if they are in agreement with each other the politicians words are true. This is what Christ was saying vs.13 for i know whence i came, and whither i go...

But having no spiritual perception they could not refer to the witness throughout the scriptures that bear witness.

The second defense that was used was the simply claiming of Abraham seed and also attempting to discredit Christs lineage by accusing him of being conceived by fornication. why is this? Because having a physical lineage was well respected custom of those in the spiritual movements of the time. The Pharisees believed that tracing your lineage back to Abraham and showing how that promised has been passed down to them because of the lineage meant that those Israelite's were more endowed because of it. It was a "status quo" that was looked at to be their ticket to just about anything.

As generations went on this issue of being traced back to Abraham became more and more of a way of recognizing people. and those that did not have it were not as well treated as those who could. This became a way to show that you were not kidding about being really who God had given the promise to. And the conventional wisdom could not disprove it because the promise was made to Abraham and the descendants of Him.

But is this the way that God works? Abraham and God were very close and not because of the same reason the Pharisees thought they were close to God.
